I would think an arctic mermaid would be kind of seal like but I understand what you were going for, and you hit it right on the mark! I love it.

yes.there are several brands. kato, fimo, super sculpy. stay away from sculpyIII those are so fragile your projects will break.

this depends on  your personal makeup. if you have  heavy or hot hands or  hot local you want a firmer clay. if your hands arent strong you might not want a very firm clay.
super sculpy is what professional kit modelers often use. it tends to be very soft and creamy like but, is easy to smooth and build forms fast. good for beginners to try.

I most often use Premo which is made by sculpy brand. Its artist grade so its colors are stable and its not brittle  or  vulnerable to cracks as super sculpy. it tends to be medium soft.

Kato is a very good clay  thats firm and very strong when baked and holds detail  like crazy. it is not available in as wide a range of colors or bulk sizes. So youd need to mix for custom colors.Forest Rogers uses it and her work is phenomenal.

Fimo ive not used much because every time I get it its hard and crumbly.  fimo soft is okay but tends to feel greasy and soft as bubble gum. i have used pupen fimo which is beautifully matte porcelain like finish for dolls and only comes in skin tones. its sort of expensive and if you over bake it .easy to do. there will be fine cracks in it.

make sure you get fresh clay. It should feel like mozzarella  cheese when you pinch it. if its hard  to roll into a ball or crumbly then youve gotten old  product. when i buy  in the store I squish it to make sure its good.

I sent this to my sister here on DA, and this is our conversation:

Me: You're riding fluffy ponies in Greenland along the coast. It hasn't snowed in a few days, but there's still blankets of it on the grass peaking out. the wind whips over the black craggy rocks from across the bleak, slatey ocean, and a tendril of white fluff catches your eye---you see---

Her: i think i would be scared

Me: She smells your fear before she sees you. She turns her pale body in your direction, skin shining dully in the light of the overcast sky. The wide eyed look reminds you of a cat; you're not sure if it's one of a creature in awe or stalking it's prey. She gathers her hair over one shoulder so as to stop it's flight in the ocean spray, and leans to one side in a show of submission and interest, a slight questioning smile on her lips . The pony beneath you nickers uncomfortably, itching to move itself, but you rein it with a flick of your wrist, fascination and terror holding you riveted. Your eyes meet hers. They're so dark, magnetic. You can see the hunger in them, but it's too late. The mermaid opens her mouth and a symphony of pure delight pours through your ears, filling your mind, devouring reason.
You're conscious only of the thunder of the elements, and laughter dancing on the end of a shining tail, before darkness and nothing.

Her: great. thanks. im gonna have nightmares

For something so small, it's very highly detailed! While I was browsing dA, I thought this was a picture to begin with. Beautiful. She looks like a true sea dweller, a very mystical creature :).
