Selkie by Sleetwealth Selkie by Sleetwealth
This is my version of the selkie (seal woman) I saw many selkies shown as I guess an Irish decent woman with brown hair, but when I think seal I think of inuit. So , for mine I chose to make a slightly inuit inspired face, but with big seal like eyes, but when completing her she seemed to want blond hair..go figure.

The details are really appalling, down to littlest detail.
I love how you interpreted the legend and brought up the very core of it.

If i ever met a selkie woman this would be how i would have imagined her in real life.

I guess I kind of take it seriously. I like the very old versions of stories. Its a peek into history and old faiths.
my sculpt Rapunzel I made after reading the oldest version I could find where she got pregnant with twins and didnt know why she got fat. That got edited out later and it turned into a children's story

Yes i remember that version.
I was rather blessed, my mum bought the original Tales of Sir Hans Christian Anderson and had some books of the original Cinderella, Rapunzel and Little Red 'Cap' now known as Little Red Ridding hood and read them to me as bed time stories when i was young.

That was why my mother laughed when they brought me to the movies to watch Disnet's Little Mermaid, i started crying and exclaimed that it wasn't the same. Haha.

I'm so glad you stand by your beliefs and produce such masterpieces.
Thank you for replying, i can't wait to see what more magic you have in store for us in the future.

Smart little girl haha. Little mermaid was cute ,but the moral and the magic was lost.
Theres so many cool stories that could be made into incredible manigful movies, but hollywood ruins them.

Your welcome. its my pleasure:)

I felt the one which undergo the most changes was Cinderella haha.
I sometimes imagine how it would really look if they had followed word for word.

Maybe Tim Burton would be inspired by them and do them some justice one day 8P

Thank you very much! I love the selkies and wanted to reinterpret what I saw most selkies portrayed like. Alot of times a gross empty brown seal skin nearby. I chose to show her partly in her seal form so it was more esthetic and animal kind.
The eyes I wanted to reflect her soul as seal not human. They always go back to the sea again and arent happy being human.

Ah thank you. I tried for that slightly asianic look. But didnt use facial referance. Most of the selkies have the brown seal skin and a brown haired woman, but I realy wanted that cold steely looking seal fur.. then go figure blond hair seemed to be what she wanted instead of black!
Im very interested in the inuit folklore, art and myths..well alot of cultures realy. Ive seen old carvings that are so powerful they move me to tears. carvings of Ravens with abalone and rough faces with bone teeth. Haunting!

I hadnt realized it before ,but someone told me my engravings looked Maori and sure enough they do! But I thought more celtic or baroke to begn with. Then I begin to feel its all connected and that the celtic and inuit cultures are not that diffenrt. I plan to make many more selkies and Id love to make one even more native looking.

I'd love to see them when you make them. I loved living in Alaska and the native art was so beautiful. I have a few collectible a ivory whales tale that was scrimshaw buy the natives, a wooden doll make by a well known Alaskan doll artist, pictures of the aurora borealis, the first time i saw it i cried I went out side at like 1 or 2 in the morning and it was cold but the beauty of it was beyond words, and in the spring the air smelled like perfume. hope you dont mind me sharing.and I agree the Inuit and Celtic art are similar, i mean the style. have a great day today ttys, terry

Sure they will go up here for everyone.
I only saw pictures in magazines ,but that was years ago and I never forgot them!Ive always been close to nature and that is in native works. That serenity and vibrancy. I used to carve wood and antler and try to make very iconic simple forms. Not realistic figures like I do now. They were satisfiying in a diffenrt way.
Its ironic that you mention Aurora Borealis because I am making an Emperess of ice right now complete with ice/glacial throne and I am attempting to capture the colors of the Borealis in her. Blue's pink, purple, green.
it sounds magical and breathtaking! I hope I can see it some day.

This is such a lovely & so detailed sculpt. I myself love the Selkie Lore as with all Merfolk lore for that matter. I was awestruck at the haunting beauty of this one. I agree the blonde looks more real then say red or brown. The eyes are my favorite part of this. They seem to give off that innocence that seals seem to have. Also when reading Selkie stories I always find that they have eyes like a seal so I have to say this is the best representation of one that I have ever seen. Kudos to you.

I love all the sea creature related myths. Seals are so beautiful and loveable that its one of the coolest ones and not all that much art done of them.
